Introduction

Because of Jacques' association with the Hermitage, Francois includes him among the recipients of his letters and circulars (rf L 125). But of his letters to Francois, we have only the two written in 1845 (LL 53, 59) and another written in 1860. The latter, however, indicates how attached Jacques remained to the Institute of the brothers.

Text of the Letter

We have found the letters you have written us full of interest. We have rejoiced and blessed the Lord with you for all the favours he has accorded you, whether in your sea voyages or in the different stations you have served in, in the islands.

I take pleasure noting, my dear Brother, that you are fully aware of your situation, and that you are applying yourself constantly to the practice of the virtues of your state. That is the true means of being happy, succeeding in your employment, and being of service to others. Those who do not understand that are unfortunate and cause much misery.

The good God has given you a great grace in giving you the love for prayer and work. Prayer has marvellous power; it dresses all our wounds, changes our bitterness into sweetness, gives us new strength to continue and complete our pilgrimage on earth, and right into God's presence. And that is where we will all be reunited.
