12 November 1841 — Bishop Jean-Baptiste-François Pompallier to Father Jean-Claude Colin, Akaroa

[This version based on the two copies sent.] Translated by Fr Brian Quin SM, July 2014

[p. 4] [address]
To Mr Colin (Claude) in Lyons, 4 St Barthelemy Rise, in Lyons
[On the back of the address when the letter is folded for sending]
I have the honour to address the Bishop’s letter and draft to Mr Collin, and ask him to kindly send me the funds to the address below:
M F Pennors, 20 Neuve Street, at Recouvrance, near Brest, carriage paid, please.

New Zealand, Akaroa Harbour
12 November 1841

Very Reverend Father
[1]
I am here on a mission journey, having been delayed at the Bay of Islands much longer than I had been able to foresee. All my funds have been used up; our mission schooner has no longer enough supplies for a very urgent journey I have to make. The only way I have of buying any is on credit from M Ferdinand Pennors, ship’s steward for the corvette L’Aube, who is happy to receive the draft which I am sending you in duplicate, and which is for four hundred francs dated today. I strongly urge you to honour it; you will oblige
your most humble and devoted servant
+ J Bte F’ois Pompallier
Bishop; Vicar-Apostolic
