MR LOUIS PERRET, aged 39 (on arrival in New Zealand after Group V in 1841).
- He was a successful architect from Lyon. He was ill on the journey out and left the Mary Gray at Capetown, following later to arrive at the Bay of Islands on 13 September 1841. Constrained by minimal resources he devised a simple but solid plan for the printery to be built Lyonnais style in rammed clay by the community itself. Realising that in such a penurious mission there would be no scope in the foreseeable future for his special skills, he left at the end of May 1842 to return to France without meeting Pompallier at whose invitation he had come. In France and Rome he resumed his architectural practice, and died in Lyon on 14 January 1882, aged 81.
