- Extract of a letter by Brother Claude-Marie dated Hokianga 1 November 1844:
- “ The Hokianga station has a very large expanse of uncultivated land with bush. One part is cultivated; there we harvest an amount of produce; there are vines, fields, a garden, seven cows, a bull, eighteen goats or billy goats, 100-150 hens, ten geese, 24 ducks, a dog, 3 cats and so on”.
