doc. 407 — October, 24 and 27 November and 2 December 1845

Letter from Philippe Calinon to Jean-Claude Colin

[9] [...] Even here in Tonga, although there is no longer any cannibalism, the generation which formerly lived off the flesh of their fellow human beings is still alive, and only recently we were able to obtain from our neophytes the admission that in their youth they hunted each other for eating. The places where the most solemn scenes of cannibalism occurred are still now covered with human bones.
