12 December 1842 — Father Antoine Garin to Father Claude Girard, Kororareka

Fr Girard
4 St Barthelemy Rise, Lyons, France.

Very Reverend Father
[1]
I told you, I believe, in a letter you must have received through Mr Henry, a young Englishman, the sum to which the expenses of the stations at Tauranga, Opotiki and Matamata could amount. Such a view, if not properly understood, can give inexact ideas, because the mission, with that only, could hardly operate. Perhaps people would not die of hunger and would survive, but to be able to go on journeys without which nothing can be done, more is needed. It’s what you ought to have realised from other later letters which were the result of the reflections of the Bishop’s council.
[2]
The ship is leaving.
Respectfully yours.
Garin
