Rom. Cath. Priest requesting grant of land in Auckland for a native chapel

St Patrick’s Auckland
March 23rd 1849

To
His Excellency
Governor Sir George Grey

Sir
[1]
Wishing to build in Auckland a chapel for the natives and also a house to receive them when they come to Auckland only for a few days I beg to request your Excellency to grant me a piece of land in the town sufficient for that purpose – If possible, I should prefer a place in the 30th Section No 10 allotment as I think that place being very central would perfectly [answer?] the intended purpose but if [one if/of?] that allotment could not be granted I should feel obliged for any one which your Excellency would grant.

Your Excellency’s Most Obed. Servant

“The Governor submitted a letter from the Rev. <?> J. Seon Roman Catholic Priest requesting that a portion of land in Auckland might be reserved for a native chapel, and for a house for the accommodation of natives who may casually visit Auckland.
[4]
Council recommended that the application should not be entertained until it was ascertained the amount that would be expended within the next 12 months in the erection of the chapel alluded to.
